Mendelssohn’s ever-popular oratorio depicting events in the life of the prophet Elijah. It premiered on 26 August 1846 in Birmingham Town Hall and has remained a cornerstone of the choral tradition ever since.
“It begins with something that sounds like Jaws ...” – listen to Simon Halsey describe the impact Mendelssohn’s Elijah has had on composers, including its link to Once in Royal David’s City, written by Henry J Gauntlett, who was the organist for the 1846 premiere. Simon describes the fascinating and breathtaking scale of that first performance and of its legacy. (Please note that the final 2 mins are about the Edition Peters score, which is not the one we shall be using.)
