September open rehearsal
7.30-9.15pm
Come and experience what it is like to sing with Hereford Choral Society
ELIJAH
Mendelssohn’s ever-popular oratorio depicting events in the life of the prophet Elijah. It premiered on 26 August 1846 in Birmingham Town Hall and has remained a cornerstone of the choral tradition ever since.
MESSIAH
As many say, “Christmas doesn’t start until Hereford Choral Society has sung Messiah”.
EIN DEUTSCHES (A German) REQUIEM
Brahms’ profoundly moving masterpiece featuring the beautiful Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen (How lovely are thy dwellings) and acknowledged as one of the great choral works of the Romantic era.
Hereford Choral Society has a proud 189 year history of providing high quality choral music. We currently have a membership of singers.
Find out how you could join us.
We rehearse on Monday evenings from 19:30 to 21:15 between September and March preparing for three concerts each season. Our concerts take place in November, December and March each season, each in Hereford Cathedral and supported by professional soloists and a full orchestra.
We also provide the bulk of the Hereford contingent for the internationally renowned and historic Three Choirs Festival, rehearsing from April until the festival in July / August each year. Hereford will be very proud to host the 300th Three Choirs Festival in 2028.
We owe a huge debt of thanks to Peter Dyke for stepping into the void left by the retirement of Geraint Bowen, and also to the wonderful Marion Bettswell for taking over the role of accompanist from Peter for the Spring Term 2026.
Peter has been our astounding and much-loved accompanist since 1998. How many millions of notes must he have played in those 28 years, not one of them misplaced!
Andrew Reid, will be joining us in September as Hereford Choral Society’s 11th conductor, filling the void left by the retirement of Geraint Bowen. We are very much looking forward to working with Andrew.
Andrew is currently Director of Music at Little St Mary’s Church in Cambridge and prior to this was Managing Director of Harrison & Harrison Organ Builders (2017–22) and also Director of the Royal School of Church Music.
He worked in cathedral music between 1996 and 2012 as Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral, Sub Organist of Westminster Abbey, and Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral. Whilst in Peterborough he directed the Northampton Bach Choir and instigated choral and orchestral concerts in the cathedral.
